Restore our Earth
5 ways Outland Opera is helping to 'Restore our Earth' this Earth Day (and beyond).

Outland Opera tells the stories that lie within the wild landscape of rural Dorset. We perform our shows right here in the countryside that makes this part of the world so special. No theatres, just the wild beauty forming our backdrop. So naturally, the environment is super important to us.
The theme of Earth Day this year is 'Restore our Earth'. Restoring the damage done to our planet is no longer an option, but a necessity. And we must all be doing everything we can to reverse climate change.
But the more connected we are to our environment, the more motivated we are to save it. And we want you to come away from an Outland Opera show feeling a renewed connection with nature.
So, how are we practising what we preach, and doing our bit to make sure our planet survives for future generations to enjoy?
1. We have a leave no trace policy
"Take only photos, leave only footprints"
We want to make sure that our performances have a positive impact on the environment. We have a 'Leave no Trace' policy which includes asking all audience members to take all their rubbish home with them. We don't sell disposable water bottles or wet weather gear. And we even encourage Little Ones with prizes for being great nature allies!

2. We invest your funds ethically
You've worked hard for your money, and you don't want it going towards harming this planet.
As a charity, anything you donate to us or spend on tickets goes purely towards our work telling stories, putting on performances, and building links in the community.
But there will be times when that money is in a bank account waiting to be used for sets, costumes, artists fees, etc. And while it is, we want it to be funding ethical projects that make the world a better place for us all.
So, you can be safe in the knowledge that our charity bank account and investments are held with only ethical banks and financial services. And if you ever want to know more about where your money goes - you can always ask. We'll be happy to tell you.
3. We limit our emissions
The electricity required to run stage lights in theatres has been a hot topic of conversation for many years. But at Outland Opera, we perform in daylight wherever possible, to limit the need for electric lighting.
Of course, we do need to transport our set and cast to the locations for each show. And we also offer shuttle transport for audience members who might not be able to get to the rural venues otherwise. But for both company and audience transport, we always look for the most environmentally friendly option within our budget.
4. Our sets and costumes are sustainable
Where possible, our project sites act as backdrops. We use landscapes, landmarks, and found materials to bring our shows to life. But when we need to build sets we use sustainable or reusable materials.
Buying our costumes and props second hand is also very important to us. And once a show is over, we reuse, donate, or recycle them, avoiding anything going to landfill wherever possible.
5. We work together
Restoring our earth is going to require everyone to work together. And as an opera company focused on community, our shows are a team effort. So our environmental policy applies to everyone who works for us.
It's no good having a set of words on our website and not living by them. At Outland Opera, these words are a central part of our work and way of life.
What's more, we listen to our community and to those who live and work in the places we perform. We're ready and willing to learn where and how we could be doing better.
Let us know what you think!
How are you working to restore our earth? And do you think the opera industry could be doing more?
